Bottom watering planters – So what exactly are bottom watering planters? Traditionally, plants are watered from the top and water is sprayed on the leaves, stem and the parts of the plant that are above the surface. However, as you likely know, plants draw in essentially all of their water from their roots. Watering plants from the top is still somewhat effective because the water sprayed on the plant ends up falling down into the soil and then it is drawn up into the plant via the roots. But when the watering is done from above the plant, some of the water is lost in the process, as leaves actually repel water and some water runs off into areas where it can’t be used by the plant.

On the other hand, bottom watering of a plant delivers the water much closer to the roots without the same spray-off and waste. It also delivers a more consistent and gradual supply of water. Bottom watering of plants allows plants to absorb the right amount of water without drenching their leaves and overwatering. With bottom watering, the roots will get enough water, which often is not the case with top watering. It also has been proven to make the root stronger and allows them to grow directly toward the moisture.
