How to choose the right color accent in interior design

Monochrome beige and gray interiors are safe, calm, but often boring to the point of yawning. There is nothing for the eye to cling to, and the space begins to resemble a sterile hotel room or office. Color accents are spices that give the room taste, character and personality, turning a faceless renovation into a home with a soul.
Many people are afraid of bright colors, fearing to turn an apartment into a circus arena or quickly get tired of the variety. But a competent accent doesn't have to shout, it can whisper or intrigue. The main thing is to maintain balance and proportions so that the color works for you, not against you, putting the interior together into a single composition.
The formula of perfect proportions
Designers all over the world use the golden rule of 60-30-10, which helps to accurately distribute colors in a space. 60% is the main background color (walls, floor, large furniture), usually neutral and calm. 30% is an additional color (curtains, carpet, accent wall) that supports the base, but differs from it in tone or texture.
The remaining 10% are the accents: pillows, vases, paintings, a bright armchair or even books on a shelf. It is this small volume of bright color that creates dynamics and attracts the eye. The beauty of this formula is that 10% of the interior is very easy and cheap to replace if the color gets boring or goes out of fashion, completely updating the perception of the room without renovation.
Playing on contrasts and nuances
Accents work best when they contrast with the general background, creating visual tension. Dark or saturated details (blue, emerald, black) look great on a light background, and a dark interior comes to life thanks to light or bright spots (yellow, white, turquoise). Use a color wheel: colors placed opposite each other enhance each other's sound.
However, the accent doesn't always have to be "rip out the eye." In a calm, pastel interior, a deeper shade of the same color or the texture of a material, such as velvet or brass, can become an accent. Metal (gold, copper, chrome) also works as a powerful accent, adding sparkle and chic, the main thing is not to mix too many different metals in one room.
Textiles and decor as a field for experimentation
If you're afraid to buy a red sofa, start small — with textiles and decor. Decorative pillows, blankets, posters, and vases are the safest tools for color input. You can change them according to the season: add cool turquoise and greenery in summer, and warm the room with terracotta and mustard tones in winter.
Live plants can also be a great color spot, especially large specimens in beautiful planters. Greenery refreshes any interior, from loft to classic, and never looks foreign. Don't be afraid to experiment, because color is an emotion, and it's up to you to decide what mood will prevail in your home.
