How to Use Self Watering Pots: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

how to use self watering pots

We often hear from people who want to learn how to use self watering pots. In this step-by-step guide, we’ll teach you how self-watering pots work, explore a bit of the science behind them and finally we’ll show you how to use them. We’ll take you through the self watering process as we try to answer some of the most common questions that we get about our planters and self watering technology.

If you’re the type who prefers things short and sweet, you can click here to see an interactive of the entire process, or here for a video.

How Do Plants Get their Food? A Brief Refresher

Before we get into the nuts and bolts of how self watering planters work, we want to give you a quick refresher course on what exactly plants do with water and why it is needed. This will help explain why self-watering planters are far more efficient than traditional planters.

Self watering planters have been around now for a couple of decades, but their popularity has risen dramatically in recent years because of their cost and water saving abilities. As we learned in school, plants require water for the process of photosynthesis. For those who need a refresher, photosynthesis is the process of turning sunlight into energy (specifically glucose). This sugar is then transported to the rest of the plant and used for cellular processes, growth, storage, etc. Plants pull almost all of the water that they use up from their roots. This water moves from a more concentrated area (the soil), into a less concentrated area (the plant root) through the processes of diffusion and osmosis.

While some plants can absorb some water through their leaves, by far, the most common method for plants to obtain water is to pull it up from the soil through their root system. As this happens, water pressure builds up in the roots, in effect pumping the water up the xylem vessels and eventually into the plant’s leaves. The leaves then use the water and sunlight in the photosynthesis process to create glucose, in effect feeding themselves. To read more, we found this article on tree physiology interesting!

When people normally water their plants, they use a hose or watering can and they water their plants from above. While this generally gets the job done, a serious amount of water is wasted, and the soil often doesn’t get the correct amount of saturation. Plants are frequently over or under-watered. Most leaves actually repel water from their surface and the water runs off wastefully onto concrete or decking. Next time you water a plant in a traditional planter, take a look at the amount of water that is actually spilled on your deck or on the concrete surrounding the planter. It is a surprisingly substantial amount.

In the traditional method of watering a plant, the top portion of the soil gets saturated, but often the water doesn’t fully penetrate to all of the plant’s roots. It’s often a guessing game to determine how much water to feed the soil. Often, the top of the soil looks saturated, so we stop watering. However, the smallest roots, often deeper in the soil, are actually the most efficient at bringing water into the roots. The amount of photosynthesis that can occur is a direct result of how much water can be pulled up into the tree. If watering is done from a hose or watering can, frequent re-watering is required as much of the water evaporates, spills off, or gets used quickly by the plant, and never fully penetrates down to the tiniest roots. It is much more of a guessing game as to how much water is needed.

As we will explain in the next section, in a self watering planter, this uncertainty and wastefulness is removed. The watering occurs from the planter itself, and this dramatically improves the efficiency of the entire process, delivering water from the bottom up!

How to Use Self Watering Pots: A Brief Summary

As we mentioned in the previous section, self watering pots do things differently. Unlike traditional pots and planters, self watering pots hydrate the plants from the roots, saving water, time and energy. Self watering planters dramatically reduce the amount of time and water needed to ensure healthy plants and flowers.

Moisture Control

Instead of spraying plants from the top, with a self watering pot, you simply fill the water reservoir with a hose, sometimes as infrequently as once every couple weeks. The frequency of watering depends on the planter size and the amount of greenery in your planter. After the reservoir is full, you are done, and the natural processes of capillary action and osmosis take over.

Water from the reservoir slowly moves its way up the wicking chamber into the soil and then into the root system. The natural processes of science take over and the water works its way up the xylem vessels of your plants. Water does not evaporate from the planter because it is not exposed to the elements. This not only saves on time, but also the amount of water that you use will be dramatically reduced.

More Benefits of Self Watering

As self watering planters deliver water directly to the root system, this greatly reduces the chances of fungus and disease to the leaves of the plant. Over-watering is not an issue as the overflow drain expels excess water. Simply fill the reservoir once every couple of weeks and then sit back and enjoy watching your plants prosper.

How It Works
Fill Port and Plug Wicking Chamber Large Water Reservoir Insulating Double Wall Overflow Drain

Fill Port and Plug

All of our planters are made with a simple fill port and durable plug. Simply use a garden hose to fill your planter when the water level gets low.

Wicking Chamber

Our all-natural wicking system is free of any moving parts or synthetic wicking materials prone to mold and replacement. As the potting mix dries out, it pulls water from the reservoir, ensuring that the plants receive a steady supply of moisture without the risk of overwatering.

Large Water Reservoir

Never worry about over or under-watering again. Our large-capacity water reservoirs provide consistent moisture levels for several weeks. Plants receive the right amount of water when they need it, leading to stronger roots and better overall plant health. Plant food can be added directly to the reservoir for a continuous flow of nutrients.

Insulating Double Wall

Constructed using UV-protected commercial-grade polyethylene. Our 4 season planters are known for their durability and resistance to fading, cracking, and other weather-related damage. No winterizing is required. 10-year Warranty

Self Watering Pots: Summary

Hopefully what you have read here has taught you how to use self watering pots and why they are beneficial to a business or municipality.

To summarize, plants need water to grow and to be healthy. Traditional watering of plants is fine for most gardeners and home owners, but it is more wasteful on larger scales for a variety of reasons. Self watering planters make the watering process more efficient and they help you save money and water. While more expensive to purchase up front, the extra cost quickly pays for itself in lower water bills and labour costs. Planters can go weeks without any additional water and time can be spent elsewhere. Not only do self-watering planters produce healthier, more lush plants, they also help businesses and municipalities save money, time and water.

At Urbanscape, our commercial quality planters have large reservoirs that can last up to three weeks. Even in dry settings, you will be able to leave your plants for weeks. Obviously, each setting will vary and you will need to keep an eye on the water reservoir at first. But once you get the schedule down, you’ll be amazed at how much water you are saving.

Our planters are not only visually appealing, they are sturdy, weather-resistant and they are all guaranteed for 10 years against weather related cracking or fading.

So if you are ready to take the next step towards purchasing your first self watering planters, you can start by looking at our products. You can get a free quote request online, and now you can see the prices for all of our planters directly on the planter pages.

Outdoor Planters

You likely have never really thought too much about the differences between indoor and outdoor planters, but there are a variety of differences and this blog post will discuss the features you should look for in an outdoor planter. The biggest difference between indoor and outdoor planters is that outdoor planters are designed to withstand various weather conditions, including rain, snow, and fluctuations in temperature. They also need to be more resistant to UV rays and the fading that can occur as a result. Our outdoor self-watering planters are made from materials that are durable and resistant to the effects of outdoor elements. To help you make your decision on which planters are the best for your space, here are some features and materials commonly associated with all-weather planters:

Material- Resin or Polyethylene: Planters made from resin or polyethylene are known for their durability and resistance to harsh weather conditions. These materials can withstand UV rays, moisture, and temperature variations.

UV Resistance: Exposure to sunlight can cause fading and damage to some materials. UV-resistant planters maintain their color and structural integrity even after prolonged exposure to sunlight.

Freeze-Resistance: In regions with cold winters, planters need to withstand freezing temperatures without cracking or breaking. Materials like frost-resistant plastics and certain metals can be suitable for such conditions.

Design: While functionality is crucial, all-weather planters often come in various designs and styles to complement different outdoor spaces.

When shopping for all-weather planters, it’s essential to read product specifications and choose ones that meet your specific climate conditions and aesthetic preferences. Additionally, proper care and maintenance can extend the lifespan of these planters and keep them looking good in any weather.

There are other considerations to take into account when thinking about purchasing outdoor planters for your space.

Drain Free Winterization- all of our Urbanscape planters feature the easiest winterization process imaginable. Unlike many more traditional outdoor planters, our planters do not require draining before freezing weather. Our polyethylene planters can handle freezing and thawing and this saves you from having to drain all of your planters at season’s end.

No Moving Parts or Synthetic Materials- some of our competitors planters use pumps or parts that require maintenance and replacement. Our self-watering planters are completely free of moving parts. They use the natural wicking qualities of water to keep your plants healthy from the bottom up. There is no easier system than our tried and tested self-watering technology.

10 Year Warranty– In case you still weren’t convinced, all of our planters carry an industry leading 10 year warranty. If anything happens to your planter, simply reach out to us and your planter will be replaced.

Drip Irrigation System Vs. Self Watering Planters

Uptown 28 Planter- UrbanscapeDrip irrigation

Drip irrigation is the process of delivering water to plants through a series of tubes, pipes and emitters. Similar to self-watering planters, drip irrigators deliver water directly to the roots of plants, minimizing water waste due to evaporation and runoff.

In a typical drip irrigation system, water is transported to the soil from a water source (such as a hose or water supply line) using a network of tubing or pipes. Along the tubing, small devices called emitters or drippers are strategically placed near the base of each plant.

These emitters release water slowly and consistently, allowing the soil to absorb the water where it’s needed the most– at the plant’s root system.

There are lots of benefits of drip irrigation systems, including water conservation, reduced weed growth, reduced spillage and runoff. Drip irrigation is widely used in agriculture, landscaping, gardening and even in some container plants.

While drip irrigation systems offer many advantages over traditional top-down watering, these systems are not without their drawbacks. Drip irrigation emitters often become clogged due to sediment, minerals, or organic matter. This can cause water blockages and leaks and these emitters do require fairly frequent maintenance and monitoring.

Secondly, if not configured properly, drip irrigation systems can lead to shallow root growth. Also, drip irrigation systems require a constant flow of water. This means that hoses are visible and must connect to the planter. This can be a trip hazard and an eye-sore. Lastly, the cost of setting up a drip-irrigation system is significantly higher than the one time cost of a self-watering planter.

The Benefits of Self-Watering Planters

Self watering planters have a large water reservoir at the bottom of the planter that feeds the plant from the bottom up. This keeps the water away from the Sun’s rays and dramatically reduces evaporation. They have no parts that require constant maintenance or monitoring.

Once you fill the planter, over time, the water from the interior reservoirs is then pulled up into the soil using wicking and capillary action. The wicking chambers in our planters allow water from the reservoir to deliver a consistent level of moisture directly to the root system, ensuring optimal plant growth.

Your job is to simply fill the planters with a garden hose once every couple of weeks and your plants will stay adequately watered, even in the hottest months of the year. To learn more about this process, see our video here.

Drip irrigation systems are clearly well-suited to larger agricultural situations, but for smaller, more contained areas, self-watering planters require substantially less maintenance and worry.

They are more economically viable for most and there is a lot less chance of water leaks that could lead to significant clean-up costs. The choice is simple: the most economical and attractive self-watering option is a self-watering planter.

How do self watering planters work?

bottom watering planters

At Urbanscape Planters, the most common question we receive is: how do self watering planters work? This article will explain the process of how they work and a bit about the science behind their effectiveness.

How do self watering planters work?

As you know, plants pull in their water from their roots. Adequately hydrated soil is the key to healthy plants. Watering a plant with a garden hose from above is somewhat effective, but often, much of that water ends up splashing off the leaves and running away from the plant. Self watering planters have a large water reservoir at the bottom of the planter that feeds the plant from the bottom up. This keeps the water away from the Sun’s rays and dramatically reduces evaporation.

Over time, the water from the reservoirs is then pulled up into the soil using wicking and capillary action. To learn more about this process, see our video here

Save Water and Time!

Self watering planters provide moisture directly to the plant’s roots, greatly reducing the risk of fungus and disease to the leaves of the plant. The overflow drain expels excess water from the planter eliminating flooding and root rot. These self watering planters give business and home owners an easy way to maintain the plants on their store-fronts or homes.

Large Self Watering Planters- Urbanscape

Cosmo Planter- Urbanscape
metropolitan self-watering planter

Are you looking for large self watering planters? In this article, we’ll highlight some of our most popular large planters and explain a bit about how self-watering planters work. We’ll also suggest reasons why spending a bit more money upfront on larger planters may save you substantially in the long-run.

What are the benefits of large self watering planters?

Self-watering planters are planters that are filled once every couple of weeks with a garden hose. The water fills an interior reservoir and then feeds the plant slowly over the next 2-3 weeks. The larger the planter, the more water it can hold and the less labour it takes to keep your plants looking beautiful and healthy. Also, large commercial planters can be used to provide a barrier between parking/traffic areas and storefronts. This added buffer-zone can double as a security feature for the front of your store. Many of our customers line their planters next to one another to provide an attractive and practical welcome to their store.

Also, in municipal or public areas, larger planters are more difficult to move or vandalize. Our planters durable polyethylene design makes them more resistant to vandalism and breakage than traditional concrete planters.

Why spend more for a large commercial planter?

You may ask yourself why spend the extra money for a commercial planter. Why not just buy a planter at your local garden center? There are a variety of reasons for this:

  • Larger commercial planters are generally larger, more sturdy and are more well-built.
  • Larger planters can act as a more substantial buffer zone between parking areas and your store-front.
  • They can line sidewalks and parking lots in municipal areas
  • They last longer and they are more resistant to chips, cracks and other failures.
  • All our planters are crafted from weather resistant thick gauge polyethylene
  • Better UV protection
  • Our planters are more weather resistant and sturdy.
  • Retail outlets often only carry a few planters in stock. With commercial planters, larger orders are possible for municipalities and urban areas.

Have a look at what some of our customers are saying on our Testimonials page.

So how big are they?

Our planters come in a variety of sizes, perfect for any location. Some of our largest planters, like the Silhouette Low Bowl, the Kingston and Hampton planters, can hold more than 15 gallons of water and more than 5 cubic feet of soil. These beautiful, large planters will keep your plants watered for weeks, reducing labour and water costs. In traditional planters, water evaporates from the top layer of soil and from the leaves of plants due to the plants being watered from above. Our planter technology ensure a slow, steady supply of water from the bottom up, reducing surface evaporation and pooling.

Concrete Planters Vs. Polyethylene Planters

Sub irrigated planters

In the past, concrete planters were traditionally the go-to planters for businesses and municipalities. However, these days, polyethylene planters offer many advantages over concrete and this article will take a look at some of the differences that exist between the two materials.

First of all, concrete planters are typically significantly heavier than polyethylene planters of similar size. They may require multiple people to move and they are more likely to be damaged when moving.

On the other hand, polyethylene planters are lightweight and versatile, making them substantially easier to move around and rearrange. This makes it easier to change your displays seasonally and keep your storefront or sidewalks looking fresh.

Polyethylene planters are more resistant to damage than concrete planters. This includes damage from the elements, including extreme temperatures, UV radiation, and moisture. Polyethylene planters are more crack resistant and rot proof. Unlike concrete, polyethylene is 4 season durable and polyethylene planters are a lot less likely to be damaged by freezing and thawing.

Additionally, polyethylene planters are a lot less likely to have their color fade over time. Colored concrete will often fade within a year or two after significant exposure to UV radiation. Polyethylene is a lot more resistant to fading caused by ultraviolet light. Polyethylene is even graffiti resistant- graffiti wipes clean with a mild solvent or pressure washer.

Finally, polyethylene planters are more affordable than concrete planters. With the high cost of concrete manufacturing these days, polyethylene planters are the more economical choice. They are also more likely to be available in a range of colors and styles, and they can be molded into a wide variety of shapes and sizes. See our planters page to see some of Urbanscape’s unique planter designs.

If you are looking for a long-lasting planter that will be exposed to harsh outdoor conditions, a polyethylene planter is the best choice. They offer many advantages over traditional concrete planters, including being lightweight, versatile, durable and affordable.

Self-Watering Planters

At Urbanscape, all of our planters are self-watering. What this means is that plants are hydrated via a reservoir inside the planter or pot. The planter’s reservoir is filled up weekly (or even less frequently with larger planters) and the soil draws the water up using capillary action. This type of watering offers many advantages: less water use, better plant health, fewer leaf/stem problems and less labour. The wicking chambers allow water from the reservoir to deliver a consistent level of moisture directly to the root system, ensuring optimal plant growth. You will waste less water on spillage and evaporation, and you will save time and money with reduced watering.

If you have any questions whatsoever, we are here to help.

Our planters all feature a water reservoir and wicking chambers that slowly and evenly keep your plants hydrated from below. Click the link to learn more about how it works.

There are many reasons that these self-watering planters are popular and beneficial for businesses and municipalities. We’ll highlight some of those reasons below and showcase some of our most popular planters.

Sub irrigated planters

Similar to what happens in natural settings, where trees and plants get hydrated from below by aquifers and saturated zones, our self-watering planters also provide consistent and gradual hydration from below.

This natural process provides moisture directly to the plant’s roots, reducing the risk of fungus and disease in the leaves of the plant. The overflow drain on our planters expels excess water from the planter eliminating flooding and root rot. You will simply need to fill the planter’s reservoir once every week, or a couple of weeks, depending on the planter.

Trough planters are long, narrow, rectangular planters that fit perfectly on decks, porches, patios and sidewalks. Our trough planters here at Urbanscape Planters are some of our most popular planters  There are many reasons that these planters are so popular and in this blog post, we’ll discuss why we think these planters might be the perfect addition to your business, storefront, home or business.

Commercial Trough Planters

Trough planters have many advantages that make them a popular choice with our customers. First of all, the narrow rectangular shape allows you to line the entire front or wall of your business with planters, while taking up less space than round or square planters with similar volume. Many store fronts have limited area to display plants. Our rectangular trough planters take up less than two feet of floor space depth. This allows plenty of room for a vibrant and welcoming array of planters and greenery.

Our trough planters, specifically our Hampton and Kingston planters, both create a beautiful, minimalistic design space for your area. They both feature wide planting areas (Hampton- 46″ wide and Kingston- 30″ wide) and large soil volume that can easily be the home to a wide of a variety of plants. So for areas that are limited in space, they are a great solution.

Many of our customers use trough planters to line the decks of their patios or businesses. Trough planters can be lined up directly next to each other to create a nearly seamless wall of planters. This can be done to provide separation between sitting areas or to act as a barrier. Again, the narrow footprint allows for a beautiful border to separate seating areas from their surroundings.

Our Kingston and Hampton planters, with their huge soil capacity and self-watering technology, give you tons of space for creativity. Their sleek and elegant design creates a beautiful visual welcome to your visitors. The possibilities are endless in terms of design and planting ideas.
